Teeth whitening – the secret of a perfect smile
Teeth whitening is one of today's most popular and most visible cosmetic dental treatments – it is fast, painless and gives immediate results. It matters not only for appearance but also plays a key role in achieving a confident smile. Even so, many people are wary of it, fearing that it may damage the enamel, cause pain or not last. We would like to dispel these doubts and explain why teeth whitening is best done under the supervision of a dentist.
Why choose professional teeth whitening?
Whitening at home without professional supervision – for example with over-the-counter products – is not only less effective but can also lead to serious problems such as gum irritation, enamel damage or unexpected pain afterwards. In contrast, whitening carried out at a dental practice is a safe, controlled and long-lasting solution that takes the condition of the patient's teeth into account.
How teeth whitening works
Teeth whitening is always preceded by a thorough oral hygiene treatment and assessment, so that it is carried out only on healthy teeth free of decay. There are two main methods to choose from: in-practice whitening with an LED lamp, and at-home whitening under professional supervision.

1. In-practice whitening – Pola Office+
In-practice whitening is the most effective option, delivering fast and long-lasting results. The Pola Office+ system we use is one of the fastest whitening technologies in the world: just 3 × 8 minutes of treatment is enough for a brilliantly white smile.
- Super fast: the entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes, so it is convenient and time-efficient.
- Maximum comfort: Pola Office+ has a neutral pH, which minimises discomfort, and contains a built-in desensitiser that prevents sensitivity afterwards.
- Long-lasting results: the result of professional whitening can last up to 1–2 years, depending on your lifestyle and oral hygiene.
How does in-practice LED whitening work?
- It starts with a professional clean.
- The gums are covered with a special protective barrier.
- Whitening gel is applied to the teeth.
- The teeth are illuminated with an LED lamp, which activates the whitening gel.
- After 8 minutes, the gel is rinsed off the teeth.
- If needed, the process is repeated twice more.
Advantages:
- Immediately visible result – teeth several shades lighter
- Quick – only 30 minutes – and carried out in a safe, controlled setting.
- The treatment uses a desensitising agent.
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for whitening fillings or restorations.
- Root-canal-treated teeth require internal whitening.
2. At-home whitening under professional supervision
At-home whitening with a special whitening gel prescribed by your dentist is also an effective method. It usually takes 5–10 days and gives excellent results, although the treatment period is longer than with in-practice whitening.
How does at-home whitening work?
- Always brush your teeth before each at-home whitening session
- Fill the custom-made whitening tray with the at-home whitening gel
- Place the tray over your teeth
- Remove any excess gel with a tissue or a dry, soft toothbrush
- After the prescribed time, remove the tray and rinse your mouth and the tray with lukewarm water
- Brush your teeth again after the treatment
Advantage: gentle, with convincing results.
Disadvantage: takes longer and may cause temporary sensitivity.
What should you watch out for after whitening?
For a few days after treatment, avoid staining foods and drinks (e.g. coffee, red wine), smoking, and foods and drinks high in sugar or carbonation. Regular professional cleaning and good oral care help the result last longer.

A perfect smile is not just a dream!
Teeth whitening is a fast, painless and safe option for anyone who wants a radiant smile. How long the result lasts depends on lifestyle and oral hygiene, but with regular maintenance treatments a bright smile can be kept for years. Whitening without specialist supervision is not recommended, however, as incorrect use can damage the teeth and gums.
